Making my own cleaner

I no longer have someone cleaning my house, and as a result, I am attempting to go all natural with my cleaning products. By that, I don't mean purchasing GREEN products, I mean making my own. Now, I know this is not a new or novel idea and that many of you probably already do it, but this is new and novel for me! I found a website that I thought had some good easy recipes for making the products: http://www.lakewinds.com/store/Recipes-for-Natural-Household-Cleaners-W4716C18760.aspx. So now I am going to make a list and next time we go to the store, pick up what we don't have.

So if you make your own, any tips? Anything I should know? I have to admit, I do love my soft scrub, but hate the fumes and hate to think about what it does not only to our water supply, but when it is time to dispose of the bottle (thank goodness for tox away recycle days!) how that effects our environment.

Oh, and on a side note. As of Monday I did stop pumping. My summer schedule does not permit me to do it (yes, my employer is fine with it and actually had not input in to this decision, but it is a personal thing with how I have to have my schedule over summer) and since lil C is almost 12 months, I just decided to stop. I was sent a thing of formula in the mail, but she won't touch the stuff at daycare. So we nurse 3X a day now at home - morning, right when we get home, and before bed. And during the day she gets a bottle or sippy cut of soy milk mixed with expressed milk till that runs out , and then straight soy milk over lunch. I think it is going to work okay for us.

To supplement or not?

Experiencing something new for me......not pumping enough during the day to sustain my little girl - only pumping about 4 ounces (which i realize is still great!), but no more milk frozen, so what I pump daily she consumes at daycare the following day. Lil C is 10 months now.....and I still nurse her each morning and night and whenever on the weekends. But - what should I do? Supplement with formula? I hate the thought of having to do that, but wonder if she needs more than she is getting. She is starving when I get there most days and I nurse her before we even leave. She is a great eater too (solids).

There is a selfish part here too - I hate pumping. I am sick of pumping. I like only pumping 1x a day. So weigh in......and I know what I should do......

Suck it up and make time to pump 2-3X a day for the next two months (when she turns one, I am DONE pumping!) and give her my mommies gold standard?

OR

Supplement with formula (oh the money. Oh the waste that isn't needed)?

Or maybe she is just fine and I am pumping what she needs? (I am also out of town for a weekend soon so have been trying to stockpile some - so I lie, I have about 6 bags in the freezer, but that is not enough for the weekend!).

I think I just talked myself in to it. Let me go rearrange my schedule.

A recent nursing reflection.....

I've said it before, but my two children are different in so many ways, but one that really strikes me is nursing habits. My son, first child, was and still is a boob boy. I weaned him at 26/27 months fairly easily, though about a week ago, we went cold turkey off his nightly bottle (he "gave" them to our dr. as a present and in return recieved a really cool Cars Sports Bottle), but since then (about 1 week) he has asked me at least 1-2X a day to nurse and gets upset when Campbell is nursing. It is an interesting progression...I usually don't say no outright, but instead talk about something we are going to do in the future, like, Oh honey, let's read a book together/snuggle together, watch a movie, go outside, whatever.....as the response NO always results in a tantrum (so I am not nursing him to clarify). Lil C on the other hand is still nursing, but she is not all that in to it. And my supply is drastically decreasing. I went from pumping 15-18 ounces a day to only pumping 5-6 now, which worries me. Though I know in my mind that b/c she is 9 months and eating (all of a sudden eating SOOO MUCH!) that this makes sense, but the irrational part of me worries that she is not getting enough or that (god forbid) I may have to supplement with formula (which is fine for everyone else, but not me......sorry! have to be honest with my readers - it is my own thing....). Sometimes while nursing I feel that she is frustrated b/c she is not getting the milk quick enough or just enough in general.......but she is growing, sleeping well (hmmmmm - kina), pooping, peeing, and eating solids, so again, this is probably just how it is supposed to be! With her brother though, I was still pumping soooo much at 9 months. They are just different. Not one better than the other, just different. Hmm.

My Sleep Shuffle

Sleep. Always something I have struggled with. Not sure I did the right things with B, but did what worked and what I was capable of and ready for at the time. As a result we have a 2 1/2 year old who goes to bed fairly easily at night, somewhat on his own, but mid-night gets up to find daddy and then sleeps till morning. It works for now.

Lil C on the other hand - we started off co-sleeping/bed sharing, but as time went on I realized that this approach was not working, mostly for her. She wasn't sleeping. I wasn't sleeping. We were both crabby. A change was needed. So......after shedding a few tears and feeling helpless, the activator in me took over. I piecked out two trusted friends and called them for help. It was really really hard for me to do - I HATE asking for help. I HATE that I could not figure it out on my own. But I am GLAD that I did it. We all need to reach out sometimes and realize that we are not perfect supermom (though I would like to believe that I am! HA!). I called two friends with two very different parenting philosophies - one similar to mine and one a little more traditional. And they gave me their thoughts. My goal as I shared with them, was to get my baby girl in her bed all night long. I still was open to nursing, but we both needed more sleep and needed it in our own beds. I also realized that I wanted to encourage some sleep habits that I did not previously get going with my son - going to bed on her own at a younger age, being okay in the crib alone, waking up and going back to sleep okay. I also had to embrace that change like this would probably not be tear free, and while I am not open to the cry-it-out method, some crying would be okay. I fully believe that at this age with my son I was not in a place where i was open to doing this and could not have handled it or completed the follow thru. But now I am in such a place.

Sooo....what did they have to say?
Friend #1 - she did what some would call tFerberizing, though I don't quite see it that way. Let's instead call it the 2-4-6-8-10 method. She would put her daughter down drowsy but awake after the bedtime routine. Do a little patting and such, then leave the room. If crying started, she would return after two minutes, then four, 6, 8, 10. After the 10 minute bout, if daughter was not asleep, she picked her up - checked diaper, temp, jammes, etc.... and then started a little walking and then back to bed for another round of 2-4-6-8-10. She told me that rarely did they get thru to 10 minutes of crying/fussing. This sounded doable to me. I liked that there was a finite end and that at no point was the child crying alone for more than 10 minutes. She did his in the middle of the night as well.

Friend #2 - similar method but more open to longer lengths of crying and no picking up. Not sure this would work for me.

Then in a magazine I read about the Sleep Lady and her Shuffle. Totally sounded like something I could do - teaching healthy habits but very little crying in a room alone. I thought, hmm, maybe pairing this with the 2-4-6-8-10 method could work. And the bottom line for me was just ensuring I was consistent. Which I know, but have never been when it comes to sleep, unless it came to nursing and co-sleeping, then I was 100% consistent! The sleep lady uses approaches based on age, but basically over a 2 week period you move from being next to the crib and moving further away until you are in the hallway. You can talk, sing, touch, but not all the time. Do it for putting child to sleep and middle of the night wake-ups.

(note - started this last week and just now finishing - train of thought shift...)

Anyway - so we have now completed our first three nights of the Shuffle. Then we went to St. Louis and experienced crazy schedules, then we dealth with daylight savings and a return home. Last night (Sunday) I continued with the position next to the crib. May do it for one more night. Then I will move further and further away. It is really working well so far. And if only I could help tech Lil C how to find her paci in the middle of the night......... So far C has been waking up 1-2 times per night, and only b/c she wants her paci and cannot find it. Last night she nursed, but for the past week has not nursed (not by my choosing necessarily, but just by default). Needless to say, I am a fan so far of the shuffle. Next up, B-man... (who gave up his nightly milk bottle, well, encouraged by me, by giving our doctor a "present" of his bottles and in place earning a really cool Lightening McQueen water bottle!).

Broken Rules

From what I read, see on tv, and hear from other moms, I sure do break a lot of rules!

  1. Never swaddled my babies
  2. Always put them down fully asleep, never drowsy
  3. Love to let them nurse all night long
  4. Let my babies sleep right next to me in hopes of more shut eye for all
  5. Never introduced a lovey/blankey
  6. Didn't wait three days before introducing new foods when starting solids. Just did whatever because, well why not?
  7. Alternative vaccination schedule for us!
  8. My kids have never seen a pediatrician - only a family doctor in this house
  9. Cry it out? No way!
  10. 30 minutes of tv a day? Hmmmm, sometimes more like 2-3 movies for B-man on the weekends...
  11. Not much into giving my toddler a sippy cup, but somehow still indulge him with a bottle of milk before bed every night.....
  12. Haven't started brushing lil C's two teeth yet....and b-man only brushes once a day (sometimes two...)
And I am sure there are more...oh well.

Pilates Anytime

I love Pilates. I really do. But I cannot afford it, nor does it work in to my schedule. I happened across a great website - http://www.pilatesanytime.com/. OMG - seriously wonderful. I signed up for the two week free trial and feel like I am in class when taking one of the classes. It reminds me of my old classes at Pilates Indy Inc. so happy I found this.
